Okay gang, it’s time to start working on this thing. Derek and Dave decided to get their thrash on to see how finished they can get this thing for Derek to take it to the Nashville stop on Hot Rod’s Power Tour. Derek called in Dirthead Dave Chappelle for his expertise on the air ride and such, but also because Dave is committed to making this thing be a Ford again instead of having a Mopar engine up front and a bunch of other hodgepodge parts.

I love the look of this thing, but it sure doesn’t work well. It’s got a hodgepodge of parts in it and now it is time for Derek to get it fixed up the right way so it can be driven more. You are going to dig where it is going and the thrash that they are putting into it in order to get it ready to rock at Hot Rod’s Power Tour.

I’ve got a Gen 2 LT1 in a 1956 Chevy, and it has always been a fun engine. We’re fans of the tech that is shared by the Powell Machine crew, and the two videos below are no different. If you don’t understand how a carburetor works, with regards to idle circuits, main circuits, power valves, and more, then you want to watch this.

For an automotive part that is often referred to as super simple and old school tech, there are really a bunch of cool tech going on inside them. I’ve owned lots of carbureted cars, and several that are fuel injected. And while I love my Holley EFI, I still totally dig my Holley carburetors too.

In the seventh episode of this new Polishing Turds engine project, Pete is going to be performing the valve job on this little supercharged small-block so it will be able to make big consistent power. He’s also going to explain how the valve job effects flow, and what the angles mean and why they matter. This is just one part of the whole makeover on this already powerful small block, but it’s going to be way better when it is all done. Check it out.

In the first season of Polishing Turds on the Real Good At Doin’ Stuff HED YouTube channel there was another small block that got the love and made considerably more power afterwards. In this new season, our pal Cody is getting the Polishing Turds treatment for his 360 cubic inch 23 degree headed small block. It has just over 9:1 compression, and is force fed boost by an F1X ProCharger. This new season of not only interesting to me because it’s Cody, but also because this combo is very similar to our own 400 inch F1X ProCharged small block.

The internet is a wonderful thing… but it is also a giant pain in the ass. And in its defense, it has just become a vehicle for people to rant and rave about things that sometimes just make no sense. In the horsepower world, the problem with the internet is that a huge percentage of people seem to find themselves discussing engines and engine components with “ideals” in mind. By ideals I mean the absolute theoretical perfect circumstances for an “ideal” engine combination that is going to make the most power per cubic inch possible. I’m talking Formula One levels of performance. Unfortunately, so many people get into discussions like this that it becomes intimidating for the average hot rodder to build an engine. For example, I talk to someone at least once per week who wants to build an LS engine that makes 400-450 horsepower who thinks they need to send stuff off to the machine shop for custom work and thousands of dollars worth of aftermarket parts, when off the shelf stuff will get them there with their junkyard engine.

And I’m not saying nobody should buy aftermarket parts, but why not save your money on the 400 horsepower combo, so you have it to spend on the 1,000 horsepower combo? Or so you can get the 6-speed swap from American Powertrain that you have been wanting?

I know some great engine builders. I love Derek at L&R Engines in SoCal. He’s done machine work on several engines for me and is a great guy who does what is right for his customers. Peter Harrell at Harrell Engine and Dyno is a close friend who does amazing work. And I’m a big fan of Daniel’s videos from Powell Machine. The thing that all three of these guys have in common, and that I hear from tons of other great engine builders, is that not every trick in the book is necessary on every engine. In fact, they aren’t necessary on most engines.

I could go down a giant rabbit hole on all kinds of levels, but this video here is in response to people talking about Torque Plates for honing. Yes they are good. No they are not needed on every application.
