On the best day of its life, a piston’s job sucks pretty hard. There is extreme heat, fire, all kinds of directional changes and generally speaking, the things just get tormented. Believe it or not, it only gets worse from there. Guys adding forced induction, nitrous, and whatever other power adders into the mix increase all of those stresses a multitude of times and when not treated properly, even the best of slugs, like those made by Mahle can suffer the ill effects. Among the maladies that can befall an abused piston is microwelding. This is when the rings and the piston actually start to attach themselves in cases of extreme heat and friction. Mahle has been running a series of videos that go through piston failure analysis and address a variety of topics. This time it is the evils of microwelding, why it happens, and how to prevent it in some sense.

When building an engine for performance, pistons are one of the items that can be pricey and that’s because they are precision machined, made out of different alloys, and are very specific for what you are trying to accomplish. The wrong piston for the job will result in an engine that does not perform to your expectation nor will it live for the expected amount of time as well. In this video, Mahle talks about that and it talks about the specifics of microwelding. We found this pretty fascinating because while we are familiar with guys collapsing ring lands, shattering or straight up melting pistons, we did not have near the knowledge we should have on this subject. In typical Finnegan style, something in the new race car is just not going to work and requires some surgery. But it’s fine. I mean it will all be fine, right? This project is something special, and considering the fact that it was originally built for a completely different engine combo and yet the LS kind of fit during mockup. Finnegan has a jillion cool projects going, but he’s been trying to keep this one a bit of a secret while tickling us all with posts on his new engine build over at ACE. For an automotive part that is often referred to as super simple and old school tech, there are really a bunch of cool tech going on inside them. I’ve owned lots of carbureted cars, and several that are fuel injected. And while I love my Holley EFI, I still totally dig my Holley carburetors too.

In the seventh episode of this new Polishing Turds engine project, Pete is going to be performing the valve job on this little supercharged small-block so it will be able to make big consistent power. He’s also going to explain how the valve job effects flow, and what the angles mean and why they matter. This is just one part of the whole makeover on this already powerful small block, but it’s going to be way better when it is all done. Check it out.

In the first season of Polishing Turds on the Real Good At Doin’ Stuff HED YouTube channel there was another small block that got the love and made considerably more power afterwards. In this new season, our pal Cody is getting the Polishing Turds treatment for his 360 cubic inch 23 degree headed small block. It has just over 9:1 compression, and is force fed boost by an F1X ProCharger. This new season of not only interesting to me because it’s Cody, but also because this combo is very similar to our own 400 inch F1X ProCharged small block.
