It’s time for Rocky Mountain Race Week folks, and that means 5 days of drag and drive action going on LIVE right here at BANGshift.com. We’ll be bringing you the action from all 5 days of racing, PLUS on road streaming action as well throughout the week. We start off Sunday June 23rd at Tulsa Raceway Park, then spend Monday on a beautiful drive through Oklahoma and Texas before hitting the famed Texas Motorplex in Ennis on Tuesday afternoon. Wednesday we’re at Thunder Valley Raceway Park in Noble Oklahoma, and Thursday we make the trek to Mo-Kan Dragway for day 4 racing action. Friday we’re back at Tulsa Raceway Park for several big money heads up shootouts and the bragging rights for who will be crowned champions for Rocky Mountain Race Week 2024!

Racing starts each day around 3pm Central and will go until the last car makes a pass around 11 pm each night. One of the neatest parts of the film is that it is narrated by Tom Carnagie who was the longtime voice of the Indy 500 at the Speedway. The guy’s voice is awesome and because he actually knows the cars, the people, and the underlying culture of the sport, he does an awesome job lending his voice to this film.

The footage is awesome and it is pretty amazing to see the massive crowds at Ontario and Pocono as this style of racing does not really draw like that anywhere but the Indy 500 these days. This was a pretty glamorous era in the world of open wheel racing. We love the look of the cars and we love the fact that the fields of these races were all filled with guys who were racing SOMETHING every weekend. When it was not this car it was a sprint car or a stock car, or a rental car, something. The life they lived was far different than the racing heroes of today. We’d argue that they were more hardcore and that’s probably because the stuff they did was so damned dangerous.

Enjoy all of this film, it is amazing.

Dick Harrell’s screaming red Nova is seen in the video as well. Many of the dragster runs as shown in “slow motion”. We’re not sure if that  is an effective digitizing the 8mm film or what but it is really nice to watch the smoke funnel off the rear tires during their runs.

It becomes evident why people latched onto the early funny cars and every other iteration as they evolved. The dragsters do not present near the show “billboard” that the full body cars do and the show element of the A/FXers sure seems stronger as well.

Now, the last thing and the elephant in the room. Every freaking time we run photos of an event we hear people say, “There’s no one in the stands, drag racing is dying all over America. When I was a kid the track was packed every day, week, month, and year. It is a sad state of affairs. We sat and watched everything! Test and tunes had the places jammed!”

On this day Lions is a ghost town. Its the same today as it was then. Some shows are homer runs and some shows aren’t. 52 years go or 52 minutes ago, the game remains the same.

To us, Tuff Truck competitions far outweigh demolition derbies for raw entertainment. While it is a spectacle to see cars running into each other, it is another level to see regular Joes risk life and limb for some glory in front of a hometown crowd at a fair, an off road park, or wherever else this stuff happens. The investment is minimal, the modifications typically consist of pulling some glass out, chopping off the exhaust, and basically gluing the throttle to the floorboard.

It may be a cheap sport to buy into but if you don’t have good medical insurance to deal with the jacked up back, bleeding kidneys, and chipped teeth it could add up fast. The title of the video is “Just Send It” and frankly there is no greater collection of Tuff Truck sends that has ever been compiled. Oh, and all of this came from just last year!

We tip our cap to the daredevils, the lunatics, the wheelmen, and the factory engineers who built junk that can stand up to this…and clearly lots of stuff that cannot.

For starters I had forgotten that GM owned Lotus for a a stretch and when they off-loaded it people were sure the brand would die. The hilarious thing is the apparent relief when the brand was sold to Bugatti of all places. Yeah, that’s a stable financial powerhouse right there!

The fact that the car kept with an ever more modernized version of the “flying wedge” design is cool and the fact that the turbocharged four banger made enough steam to get this thing to run 13.50s back in the day was both weird and amazing. I think that was the most confusing thing for me as a little guy. It just didn’t seem right that the car only had a four banger. This was long before weight balance, handling, and the effects of dumping a heavy engine into a car designed for handling meant anything to me.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I am going to find and old Lotus on eBay.
