It’s common knowledge that for every legendary dream machine of the 1960s, there was a much more pedestrian and common form that shared at least 75% of the basic composition and bones. For every Buick GSX, Pontiac GTO or Oldsmobile 442 there was your standard Skylark, Tempest and Cutlass that were powered by the basic V8s that had enough power to move around, just not enough to re-arrange your spine and perception of time. The same went for AMC, Mopar and Ford. In fact, let’s look at the Blue Oval’s prize stallion, the Mustang. Born off of the bones of the Ford Falcon, the Mustang had a more sedate version up through 1994. Falcon, Pinto, every other Fox-chassis car made…get the point? The bonus is that whatever works on a Mustang translates to the wallflower cars as well. That’s why there are such things as wheelstanding Fairmont wagons and absolutely nasty small-block Pintos in this world.

Falcons have a following, sure, but they aren’t that common, and a four-door 1960s-vintage Falcon doesn’t excite anyone here in America (shaddup, Aussies, we know, we know). In fact, that’s why this 93,xxx-mile 1967 Falcon caught my eye. For starters, it’s a clean sedan. It’s powered by the 200ci six and has an automatic transmission. This was Aunt Judy’s car, the most basic of the basic.

But….hear me out. Whatever works on a 1967 Mustang works on a 1967 Falcon, right? So, why not try a phantom build? Say Shelby took pity on the family man and decided that a hopped-up four-door Falcon was the perfect trick. Maybe it would work somehow on the SCCA circuit too, who knows. While the 428-powered GT500 debuted for ’67, we think that something more like the GT350 would be more appropriate: a nasty little small-block screamer, backed by a TopLoader, with the suspension goodies and the exhaust note and all. Take some style cues from Ford Australia’s XR GT Falcon, and that sounds like a winner.

Or, just enjoy a nice, stock light blue six-cylinder Falcon. Your choice, after all.

If you have been following Project Hay Hauler for the past few years, then you know that this truck has gone through a ton of modifications over the years. Scott Liggett first found it on a weekend drive and once it was in his possession he immediately started working on it. At first, it was small things, like some wrecking yard seats and console, then it went to engine and transmission love. From there the suspension and brakes got some attention. Then it was a different engine, a different transmission, and ultimately an amazing COVID teardown and rebuild. That rebuild was only supposed to be for some floor and rocker rust repair but snowballed into a full-blown chassis restoration that included converting it to a short bed. The bottom of this bad boy is amazing looking too.

If you missed any of the previous installments on Project Hay Hauler, then use the link below.

CLICK HERE IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN ALL THE PROJECT UPDATES

Someone is going to get lucky and take this truck home with them to make their own memories. Scott is selling it to help fund other projects and we know that whoever gets it will love it. I’ve driven this truck and can tell you that it would make a great daily, weekend cruiser, or whatever you’d like. The patina is great, but this truck is still enough of a blank canvas to add whatever you might want to make it your own. Check it out by clicking the link to Bring A Trailer below.

We all know what happened at GM for the 1977 model year. The cars all got smaller. They got lighter, more efficient, the lines got more taught, the company was adjusting its lineup to meet the demands of consumers who wanted more fuel economy, less girth, and better performance. Well, not ALL the cars got smaller. See, in 1977 the E-Body platform was the last to keep its massive size for one more go ’round. The E-bodies were the huge front wheel drivers. Most well known was the Cadillac Eldorado but this Olds was basically an Eldorado on a slightly tighter budget. Packing a 403 instead of the 455 which was offered up until 1976, the big V8 is mounted sideways and the legendary TH425 automatic transmission is the unit that sends the power to the front wheels.

Frankly, we didn’t really even know that these cars existed. We should have as Olds sold more than 30,000 of the suckers during this last gasp of humongo luxury. Rolling down the road on the 122-inch wheelbase and sitting on the couch-like front seat must have been just the ticket for old school buyers who wanted the most modernized massive car the company made. For 1978 the cars were unchanged, still. It was in 1979 when the shrunken version of the E-body arrived. Gone was the 403 and in went a 350 engine. There was also a diesel offered that year. A notable disaster of an experience that some 8,000 people participated in.

Longer than a Buick Electra 225 and weighing in at 4,700lbs, these things really must have been a sight to behold back then.

This car is in wonderful shape although someone is going to have to get their hands dirty to get the weeping, leaking underside handled. Hey, the good news is that it will never rust.

We’re not sure what the market is for these cars but this one seems to be about as nice as anyone would ever find and it is listed for $14,500. Is that steep? We’re not sure. We just know you can’t put a proper price on this type of 1970s swank and luxury!

History is a funny thing and it is all about perspective. If you were to tell 1960s hot rodders what would be available from the factory today in terms of raw performance they’d buy a ticket on the next time machine ride. From Hellephant crate engines to the incredible cylinder head options out there, it would be a wondrous thing for them to see. That said, we look backward and revel what these guys could buy over the counter from their local dealer. Stuff like the intake manifold below which is a factory designed and made dual quad tunnel ram for FE engines.

This particular intake will bolt onto any FE engine unlike the tunnel port stuff which needed the special heads to fit. This one uses medium riser style ports so if you have a hankering for all this goodness on top of your FE, bolt away. In reading a load of posts on Ford boards, this sucker will apparently fit under the hood of most period cars as well.

Is it overkill? Yes. Will it be more eye-candy than legit performance upgrade for many engines? Probably. Do we still want it? Hell yes.

There hasn’t been a lot in the way of new vehicles that has prodded my interest in the last couple of years. If I like it, it’s overpriced. If it’s affordable, it sucks and I don’t want it. “Meh” on both sides of that coin. But one vehicle that I am actually, honestly intrigued by and curious to actually drive is a new Ford Maverick. I’ve been up-close with Ford’s latest little truck, and outside of the kind of odd lighting arrangement up front, I dig it. It’s bigger than I was expecting, small enough to be useful, and it doesn’t come off as a complete penalty box inside. I’ll reserve full judgement for after I drive one, but so far, so good. And the price is well within reason in my eyes as well.

I’m a proponent of smaller trucks and coupe-utilities. If I had the funds, I’d import an Aussie ride over here, don’t really care which one. Ford, Holden, Chrysler, they all look great to me. Well, except maybe the AU Falcon. Even I can’t get fully on-board with that one. But El Caminos, Rancheros, GM S-trucks, Dakotas…all great, all reasonably sized. You don’t feel like you’re a small step away from needing a CDL to drive one, you can park it without accidentally nudging some grandmother’s Buick Encore, and don’t need a built-in “man step” to get in the back to unload it. And that’s why I dig this little Pinto so much.

This Pinto has quite a bit going for it. For starters, as a 1980 model, the whole exploding joke doesn’t qualify…this is a post-recall Pinto. It was also a wagon when it left the assembly line, but in this day an age, changing things up with a bit of surgery is barely anything to blink at. And the little mini-Ranchero look works well here, with a clean conversion, a wood-detailed bed and storage box, and even some thought given to the interior space behind the front seats. Someone really went out of their way to build this car right.

Speaking of built right, go under the hood. No 2.3L four here…per the description, that’s a 302, a C6 automatic, and a rear axle filled with Richmond 3.55 gears. You want a small truck for just over twenty grand? Take your pick…you could have a brand-new Maverick. Or, you could score this custom Pinto. Your call!

There’s not a lot to say about this wagon other than WOW! You are looking at a 1972 Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser station wagon with an Olds 350 engine an effectively not a single flaw. If there were a vintage wagon concours car show, we’re thinking that this car would be about a 99 pointer. The paint is magnificent, the simulated woodgrain is amazing, the windows…all of them, are clear and crisp and sho no signs of the fogging some get after 50 years of living in the sun. The interior, all of it. This thing is a living breathing example of peak station wagon.

While many people like the Buick Sport Wagon over the Vista Cruiser, we’d argue that styling-wise, the Olds wins this fight. The way the bumpers wrap, those muscular rear quarter panel kickouts, and even the finished treatment of the rear bumper all make this thing really great from literal end to end.

This car was only driven 44,000 miles over the last 50 years. Outside of the paint and some other stuff under the car it’s as original as it can be. The interior is all kinds of brown. It would surely be sticky as hell in the middle of the summer and you’d slide across it an ice rink in the winter but it’s perfect.

What else can we say. This is just fantastic on every level.

It’s not that often anymore that we see a car that stops us and makes us go….damn. Not in the way a million dollar build or a Ridler award contender does but rather in the way a simple, well executed, somewhat unique ride can do. This 1966 Buick LeSabre Sport Coupe did it to us and we cannot stop staring at it. The car is factory stock outside of the wheels, steering wheel, and well, that’s it. Buick claims to have made 13,800 of these 3,751-lb machines. The car has a three speed automatic and a Buick 340 engine. One minor mystery is knowing whether it has the lower compression 220hp version or the optional higher compression 260hp version.

As the seller notes in his ad, this thing is the cure for the common Impala. They sold something like 650,000 Impalas that year and even the big Pontiacs were larger sellers. There’s very little we’d change about this car outwardly. The wheels are older but they seem to fit this car perfectly. We’d probably swap a stock style steering wheel back onto it and yes, we’d 100% hunt around for a 425 to put in it and then likely plug a stick behind it. Not to make the car some sort of a drag racer, but just to have the big cubic inch hair on its chest.

The seller is looking for a little more than $20,000 here and for the quality of car it seems to be, we’re thinking that’s good money. What say you?

Oh sure, the Merlin may be more sexy in a few ways but we’ll always hav the Allison V-1710 in our hearts as the workhorse V-style piston engine of WWII. These engines were found in a load of different aircraft and by all account did everything they were asked very well and as reliably as one could expect in the heat of battle. There were so many of these things made that after the war they were sold for peanuts out of war surplus yards and by dealers. Famously guys like Art and Walter Arfons, EJ Potter, Lee Pendleton, and others got to using them for racing engines and in pulling tractors. They were hot rodded in racing airplanes, used to set water speed records, and the list goes on and on.

This particular engine is awesome because it has been totally rebuilt and has 0-hours on said rebuild. For all intents and purposes, you are looking at a brand new engine. Now, that being said…The maintenance tag that is shown in the ad seems to indicate that this particular unit went into service in 1943, was rebuilt with 360 hours on it and then weirdly again with 362 hours on it and lastly it was stamped in February of 1944 where it was serviced again with nearly 500 hours on it.

Who wants one of these? Well, vintage hydroplane racers, tractor pullers still use them to some degree, and anyone who loves engines would enjoy owning this amazing, supercharged, piece of high horsepower war-fighting history. At $37,500 and with the capability of being turbocharged and making some huge by large power, it actually makes some financial sense when stacked up next to the cost of a blown, billet hemi or similar engine.

What a neat piece!

We’ve all heard the topes involving Edsel. They were ugly, they were a failure, they had a grill that people laughed out of town and were embarrassed to be seen sitting behind. There are so many people have written books about the brand. But here’s the thing. Looking at this 1958 Edsel Bermuda station wagon defies all the stuff in our modern time. The audacity of this car is just fantastic. The bold red paint, white roof and quarters, and the woodgrain sides are just the most 1950s things ever. If given the option on styling and uniqueness alone, how do you pick a 1958 Chevy over THIS?!

The car is powered by a 303hp 361ci engine that made torque for days and surely shoves this thing down the road with no trouble. It has the pushbutton transmission with the controls mounted in the steering wheel, a red and white interior that looks all but brand new and even the wire wheels, which we’re normally not fans of, look right at home here.

The Edsel brand was doomed by a few major things. Yeah, the styling was one but the late 1950s economic recession, a rollout that was just not executed properly, and market pressure from the likes of GM and others made the brand an albatross around the neck of Ford.  Oh, and this thing is rare. Only 892 1958 Bermuda wagons were built. They sold for $3,155 bucks which is about $30,000 in today’s money.

And yes, we know the brand as a failure but it needs to be noted that overall, in 1958 Edsel had the larges introductory year of sales of any mid-priced brand ever in history. By 1960, it was doomed.
